Sometimes we marvel at the workmanship in the furniture we have, at the ability of craftsmen to create a beautiful object that will last figuratively forever. This is one of those. Built originally for a customer when the year number started with an 18, it is an item of simple beauty. You will find yourself stroking the top every time you walk by, a bit like automatially stroking a dog..... anyway enough waffle...
Typical of this era it is a heavy chunky peice of woodwork, made from mahogany which became popular in the UK in the mid 18th century (aided and abetted by tax reductions) with a tongue and groove rear panel. Interesting that the drawers in this chest were lined with old newspapers, mainly from the 1950's, which after reading them essentially showed that the news doesn't really change, only the names involved.
