The very nature of telephone tables means they simply have to be a retro item, unitl the 60's the vast majority of the uk population made phone calls using the street corner phone box, as we moved into the 70's the technology and cost made it possible to "get the phone put in". It was fixed, by a cord, normally of limited length, meaning the position of the phone was fairly fixed in the home, often near the front door or at the bottom of the stairs. Hence a piece of furniture was developed with this in mind, take a bow, The Telephone Table.
Encompassing a seat, with a space for the phone, plus storage for the phone book and yellow pages, notebook and pen for the organised, sometmes a small cupboard, maybe a drawer or sometime a shelf it was the place to sit while having a chat with your friends.
The demise began in the 80's with the advent of the cordless handset, which meant we could wander at our pleasure, hogging the phone in private for the first time.
Today they are mainly repurposed into some creative use, but are generally excellent strong peices of furniture lightly used.
This one is in very nice condition, with cabriol legs and a more ornate design than many in a mohogany finish.
